Emergency blue lights

Have you ever seen someone driving behind you with a flashing blue light? Do you know what that blue light means?

In New Jersey, a blue light on a vehicle indicates that a volunteer firefighter or EMT is responding to a 911 call in their personal vehicle. These individuals are on their way to the fire station, rescue team, or first responders to provide the manpower needed for emergency apparatus to respond to an incident.

If you see a passenger car with a flashing blue light, treat it like any other emergency vehicle. The driver is requesting the right of way. This is not just a courtesy light. When it is safe to do so, pull over to the right and come to a complete stop to allow them to pass safely. This action is required by law under NJ Statute No. 39:4-92.
